Cornwall - A magic three day road trip

And the trips in the UK continue. The fact that I would be leaving the country soon certainly helped me to realise that I have not seen enough from the UK during my time here. And this time I was really grateful for the girls to agree to come with me on a weekend road trip to Cornwall. It wouldn't have been the same without them.

Together we figured out a schedule and everyone was giving feedback on what they would like to do, such a blessing that we all agreed so readily to the same things.

We rented a car for the long weekend, Friday til Sunday. We obviously started from London and included a GPS knowing the three of us.

We started out with a 'yummy' breakfast (yuck) on the highway and enjoyed the scenery along the way until we got to our first stop in Penzance. The first night would be spend in a hostel:

YHA Penzance
Castle Horneck; Penzance; Cornwall; TR20 8TF

The first stop we planned was Drogo Castle, however with the admission fee, rain and it being under construction we decided to leave after a quick walk around.

The next stop for us was the Launceston Castle, a ruin in a very quiet and peaceful area. The entry was just over 4 Pounds and nice for a slow and scenic walk around.

After we left the Castle we headed over to the 'city center'. It was a small high street and a few shops around, nothing to go crazy over. And of course the obligatory church was found near by as well.

By the time we got to the shop they had run out of Cornish Pastries so we went with the sandwich instead

On our way to Penzance we stopped at St Michael’s Mount - unfortunately the weather was not really on our site that day and we arrived during high tide, which means we were not able to walk over to St. Michaels for a visit. Instead we just wandered around as usual and enjoyed the beach albeit the grey clouds, at least we were spared of the rain while there.

We had as well a walk through the town of Marazion. It is a cute little town with a few offers for souvenirs and local information and a few quirky shops.

For dinner we headed to the nearby town Penzance and found a pub opposite the closed Jubilee Pool, it was decent edible food, but not our favourite.

The next day we continued our trip towards Lands End with drives trough small roads, you are able to pick some berries along the way from your car window and at a few corners we had a little bit of fun by being scared of big cars coming our way. We are just not used to the narrow roads.

A phone box in the wild, a rather surprising find

On the way we stopped by the Minack Theatre. It was a beautiful day with rays of sunshine and a fresh land smell. The view was spectular and if you are planning to attend a play here I would certainly think it is worth it. Although you might want to bring an Umbrella just in case.

Our final stop before heading to the Hotel was Land's End, an absolute gorgeous area with great views. They did build it obviously with the tourists in mind and a few things were just surreal for us and only provided entertainment for the kids really.

You can change the Lands End sign with a personal message, of course this is a service you have to pay for.

We tried as well the local made Cornish Ice cream. I couldn't really taste any difference

On the way further we started to get hungry and wanted to visit the Rick Stein restaurant at the port of Padstow, a small fisherman's town. It was highly recommend online and once we got there, the food looked super yummy and we can really recommend a stop here. The fish and chips are just divine and not swimming in oil and salt.

The prawns were just amazing! We could have eaten more boxes of those.

From there we continued the drive to the Tintagel Castle, which had amazing views! If we had more time and money we would have tried to stay in this amazing Camelot Castle Hotel. The Tintagle Castle was unfortunatelya bit too far for us and we didn't really had enough time for a climb around there, so we were happy with just walking around a bit, taking pictures and enjoying the view as long as we could.

We stopped by the nearby town Tintagle and had the obligatory scones and tea. We decided to go with the King Arthur's Arms Inn on the main road. Unfortunately the quality was not the best we ever had and were rather disappointed with the scones.

For the second night we decided to take a room for the three of us at an B&B and it was one of the better decisions. The B&B just made us feel homey and welcome, we didn't want to leave.

Upton Cross B&B
Address: Upton Cross Guest House, County Road, Upton
Bude, EX23 0LY, United Kingdom
Phone: +441288355310

From the B&B it was only a short drive up to the Sunset view place by the Coast Cliff.

As there were not many restaurants around we decided to do some shopping and eat Backpacker style at home with sandwiches and salads while being entertained by the home-owners dogs.

Before we returned to London we stopped by Bath for our lunch and a walk around this beautiful city. I have been here before and visited one of the Spa's, I really think this is a must stop for every visitor that want to treat themselves a little bit.

Overall the road trip was fantastic and we got to see a lot in just three days. Price wise the trip has as well been really reasonable as we shared the cost. Travelling alone would have been by far more expensive with less quality on the accommodation.

Accommodation = 140
Car = 132
Petrol = 103
Total: 375
Per Person: 125

I hope you enjoyed the entry and as usual HAPPY TRAVELS!
